Assignments for Feb. 12

Excel: For Valentine’s Day, use Excel and this Census data to find the ratio of never-married men (not divorced or widowed, just never married) to never-married women in each of the age groups listed. You may want to refer to Robert Niles’ excellent guide to stats for journalists.

After you’ve read that, you can download the Excel file containing FBI crime stats by state for 2006 and, for each state, calculate the percentage of violent crimes and property crimes that each type of area (MSA, cities outside MSA and non-metropolitan counties, using the estimated totals) represents of each state’s total. Then calculate the violent crime rate for each type of area. Please pay attention to the “data declaration” posted for details on the figures – if you spot any oddities in the data, they should be explained here.
