Excel: For Valentine’s Day, use Excel and this Census data to find the ratio of never-married men (not divorced or widowed, just never married) to never-married women in each of the age groups listed. You may want to refer to Robert Niles’ excellent guide to stats for journalists.

After you’ve read that, you can download the file of FBI crime stats by state for 2006 and, for each state, calculate the percentage of violent crimes and property crimes that each type of area (MSA, cities outside MSA and non-metropolitan counties) represents of each state’s total (using the estimated total). Then calculate the violent crime rate for each type of area. What jumps out at you when you do this?
